Rising sign calculator
Your Rising sign — the Ascendant — is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born.
Why the Rising sign needs an exact time
The Ascendant is the one placement in a chart determined by the rotation of the Earth rather than the movement of the planets. A full rotation takes a day, so all twelve signs pass the horizon in twenty-four hours — roughly one new sign every two hours.
That is why an hour of uncertainty in your birth time can change the answer completely, and why a birth certificate time is worth digging out. A remembered “sometime in the morning” is not enough.
What the Ascendant describes
The Rising sign is the first impression: manner, pace, physical presence, and the way you approach an unfamiliar situation. It is the part of the chart other people meet before they know anything else about you.
It also sets the frame for the rest of the chart. In whole sign houses, the Rising sign becomes the first house, which fixes where every other planet lands — so getting it right changes the shape of the whole reading.

Common questions
- What if I do not know my exact birth time?
- Then your Rising sign cannot be calculated honestly, and we will tell you so rather than pick one. Your Sun and Moon signs are still available. Birth certificates, hospital records and, in some countries, the civil registry are the usual places to find an exact time.
- Why is my Rising sign different from other sites?
- Usually one of three reasons: a different house system, a different timezone or daylight-saving rule applied to your birth date, or the sidereal zodiac instead of the tropical one. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac with whole sign houses.
- Is the Rising sign the same as the Ascendant?
- Yes — they are two names for the same point, the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at your moment of birth.
