Big three calculator

Your Sun, Moon and Rising — the three placements people mean by “the big three” — calculated to the degree from your birth date, time and place.

What the big three actually are

The big three are the Sun sign, the Moon sign and the Rising sign, and they are shorthand for the three questions a chart answers first: what you are trying to become, how you process feeling, and how you come across before you have said anything.

They are not ranked. A chart has ten planets and twelve houses, and the big three are simply the three placements that describe the most visible part of a person, which is why they became the standard introduction to a birth chart.

What you need to calculate them

The Sun sign needs only your date of birth. The Moon sign needs the date and, for accuracy, the time — the Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so a birthday near a transition can go either way without one.

The Rising sign is the strict one. The Ascendant moves through a new sign roughly every two hours, so it needs an exact time and a place. Without a birth time we calculate the Sun and Moon and tell you plainly that the Rising could not be determined, rather than guessing.

How this calculator works

Positions come from a real ephemeris rather than a lookup table, using the tropical zodiac and whole sign houses. The calculation runs in your browser: your birth date, time and location are never sent to a server, which is unusual for a free chart tool and deliberate here.

Your own chart

Five questions, and the placements above are calculated for the minute you arrived.

Common questions

Can I find my big three without a birth time?
You can get the Sun and, in almost all cases, the Moon. The Rising sign genuinely cannot be calculated without a time, because the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours. Any tool that gives you a Rising sign without asking for a time is guessing.
Which of the big three matters most?
They describe different layers rather than competing. The Sun is the direction you are growing in, the Moon is your internal weather, and the Rising is the interface other people meet first. Most people find the Moon explains the most about their private life.
Is the big three calculator free?
Yes. Calculating your Sun, Moon and Rising is free and needs no account. The optional paid reading is a longer written interpretation of those placements.
